Stainless Steel 317/317L is a molybdenum-containing austenitic stainless steel with superior corrosion resistance. Typical composition consists of Chromium (18–20%), Nickel (11–15%), Molybdenum (3–4%), and low carbon in 317L to resist intergranular corrosion. It offers superior tensile strength (at least 515 MPa), yield strength (at least 205 MPa), and elongation (at least 35%). It has a density of 8.0 g/cm³ and retains toughness at cryogenic temperatures. The low carbon variant, 317L, possesses enhanced weldability and resistance to sensitization and is well suited for use in critical instrumentation applications in hostile service conditions.
