Its usual composition contains 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, 2–3% molybdenum, and up to 0.10% carbon, with the rest being iron. This gives it a high strength and resistance to corrosion, particularly at high temperatures. Its mechanical properties are tensile strength around 515 MPa, yield strength around 205 MPa, elongation of around 35%, and a maximum hardness of 217 Brinell. The high content of carbon enhances creep resistance and is thus recommended for challenging industrial uses.
